From Refugee to Dentist Giving Back to Refugees - Ola

كلاجئة، كنت محظوظة لأنني استطعت الوصول إلى ما أنا عليه اليوم كطبيبة أسنان تمتلك عيادتها الخاصة، وبعد ذلك شعرت بالالتزام بأن أرد الجميل للاجئين في جميع أنحاء العالم. اسمي علا كراكي، ولدت وترعرعت في مخيم عايدة في بيت لحم، فلسطين. أنا طبيبة أسنان، وطفولتي كانت في شوارع المخيم. أتذكر المشي عبر الشوارع الضيقة إلى المدرسة، مروراً بنقاط التفتيش عند مدخل المخيم، وكانت أكثر الأمور صعوبة في طفولتي هي السير تحت المطر في الشتاء. عندما قررت دراسة طب الأسنان، لم يكن الأمر سهلاً لعائلتي لأن ذلك كان شيئًا جديدًا. عادةً اليوم تستغرق الرحلة بالسيارة من بيت لحم إلى الجامعة حوالي 20 دقيقة، لكن في تلك الأيام، خلال الانتفاضة الثانية، كانت الرحلة تأخذ مني ساعة ونصف إلى ساعتين أو أكثر إذا أُغلق حاجز التفتيش. بعد إنهاء درجة الماجستير، قررت فتح عيادتي الخاصة بالقرب من المخيم، لأوفر علاج الأسنان بجودة يستحقها الناس هنا. عندما رأيت الحاجة الماسة للعناية بالأسنان في مخيمات اللاجئين في شمال اليونان، من خلال منظمة تدعى Health Point Foundation، لم أتردد. بعد بضع سنوات، عدت للعمل مع اللاجئين مرة أخرى، ولكن هذه المرة كان في مخيم موريا. كل يوم، كنت أمشي في شوارع المخيم الضيقة المزدحمة، مروراً بطوابير اللاجئين، مما ذكرني بأيام طفولتي حين كان الناس يقفون في طوابير لإنهاء أوراقهم أو للحصول على بعض الإمدادات. التطوع في مخيمات اللاجئين، بصفتي لاجئة فلسطينية، أعطى الناس هناك الأمل بأن ظروفهم ستتغير يومًا ما، وأنهم بمساعدة الآخرين سيغيرون أوضاعهم. وأيضًا، سيصبحون يومًا ما أطباء أسنان أو محامين، وسيردون الجميل كما تلقوه عندما كانوا بحاجة إليه في مخيم اللاجئين. --- Being a refugee, I was privileged to get where I am today, being a dentist with my own clinic. Afterwards, I felt obligated to give back to refugees around the world. My name is Ola . I was born and lived in Aida Camp in Bethlehem, Palestine. I am a dentist. My childhood was in the camp streets, and I remember walking through the narrow streets to school, passing through the checkpoints at the camp entrance. The most difficult thing I remember from my childhood was walking in the rain during winter. When I decided to study dentistry, it wasn't an easy decision for my family because it was something new. Nowadays, it only takes around 20 minutes by car from Bethlehem to the university, but back then, during the Second Intifada, it took me around an hour and a half to two hours, or even more if the checkpoint was closed. After completing my master's degree, I decided to open my own dental clinic near the camp to provide high-quality dental treatments that people here deserve. When I saw the urgent need for dental care in refugee camps in northern Greece, through an organization called Health Point Foundation, I didn’t hesitate. A few years later, I returned to work with refugees again, but this time it was in Moria Camp. Every day, I would walk through the crowded, narrow streets of the camp, passing by lines of refugees, reminding me of my childhood days when people stood in lines to get their papers or supplies. Volunteering in refugee camps, as a Palestinian refugee myself, gave people there hope that their circumstances would change one day and that they, with everyone's help, would change their situation.
